Why Are You Settling?

by Carla Marie Ciampa on May 30, 2009

Girls Gone Wild 1.0 a.k.a. Thelma and Louise. All they wanted was a weekend away from their disappointing lives. Except now they are on theĀ  lamb. Instead of quietly expressing themselves for the last decade, they kill a man who is the last straw on the proverbial camel’s back. Frightened, panicked and alone they take stock in how their lives have come to be such a mess. Then they realize how it happened.

“You get what you settle for.”

No truer words were ever spoken. Yet somehow this movie was the first time I had ever heard them. I came from a middle class family. My parents were so pleased to not be scrapping by as their parents had, they never dreamed for more. They never pushed for more. Not from themselves or me. They couldn’t imagine being ungrateful enough to want for more.

Is there anything wrong with being satisfied? No, not in and of itself. There’s a lot of value in being satisfied, but there’s a lot of danger in it too. If you never raise your standards you pretty much set yourself up for a status quo kind of existence. If we’re too satisfied we stop looking for opportunities to grow. and if we’re not growing we’re not really living.

How do you seek out oppotunities to grow?
